Pedro was one of the lead voices championing Latin America’s increasing baseball influence during his time at ESPN. Pedro frequently played the role of translator, interviewer, and journalist all-in-one. According to Cronkite student Marco Peralta, he advised young journalists to "use [their] gift of being bilingual."

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists is dedicated to the recognition and professional advancement of Hispanics in the news industry. NAHJ has over 4,000 members across the country. Their goal is to provide, encourage and support the study and practices of journalism and communications by Hispanics. The Pedro Gomez Foundation is proud to partner with NAHJ to continue that focus by providing an annual paid 10-week summer internship to undergraduate students.
Past Recipients
2024: Erick Trevino
Erick Trevino was the 2024 Pedro Gomez/NAHJ recipient for the Arizona Republic’s 10 week summer internship. He held the internship while getting his master’s in Specialized Journalism at USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.
In the future, Erick plans to cover tech and business. He is “thankful for the opportunity to grow in this internship experience.” Being in Phoenix allowed him to “explore a different city in the US and see what makes this city unique.”
2023: April Santana
April Santana was the 2023 Pedro Gomez/NAHJ recipient for the Arizona Republic’s 10 week summer internship. She held the internship while getting her degree in Magazine, News and Digital journalism from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. She currently works as a Reporter The Post and Courier in New York City.
